Hijab.

Hijab

One word that has caused controversies, created hot topics for discussions and debates, and also a symbol unity .

Hijab means cover in Arabic.

We have different types of hijabs. Some wear with abaya and others wear with modest Wear.

First, that is most commonly worn by women is a square scarf that covers the head and neck, but leaves the face clear.

Second, is known as Shayla:

Shayla is a long, rectangular scarf that is wrapped loosely around the head and tucked or pinned at the shoulders.

Third is known as Khimar: The khimar is a long, cape-like scarf that is wrapped around the head and hangs to the middle of the back. Then we have the Niqāb: The niqab is not a headscarf but a face-covering that covers the mouth and nose, but leaves the eyes clear. It is worn with a head scarf.

Last but not least is Burqa : The burqa covers the entire face and body, leaving a small mesh screen through which the woman can see through.

Why do women wear hijab?

Muslim women choose to wear the hijab for a variety of reasons. Some, it is spiritual. A show of devotion to the God AlMighty. Others, is a way of expressing their Muslim identity.

My personal two cents.

I wear for both reasons and more. As a way of showing my devotion to Allah (s.w), expressing my Muslim identity, showing my integrity and also show a unified front to my Muslim sisters.

Hijab, for me, not only means to cover my physical being, it also means to cover my soul not to deteriorate but to be the best human being.

I believe when a woman wears hijab to express their Muslim identity and devotion to Allah, it shouldn’t be only the physical appearance but it should encompass their character, integrity and their interactions with others.

Narrated `Abdullah bin `Amr:

The Prophet (ﷺ) never used bad language neither a “Fahish nor a Mutafahish. He used to say “The best amongst you are those who have the best manners and character.” (See Hadith No. 56 (B) Vol. 8)

It is sad to see a Muslim sister wearing hijab and has atrocious behaviour. It negates the meaning of hijab.

To me, hijab means beauty, means being humble, compassionate, courteous, selfless, charitable and have the best character. I always tell my daughters, wear hijab with pride and also show the best character.

Don’t wear hijab, if you just want to express your Muslim identity without your integrity.

Never judge others and think you are better than them just because you are wearing hijab. They might not be wearing one but have better character than you.

Some women might choose not to wear the hijab, however, hijab or no hijab. We are still ONE.
